When starting something new, such as the new podcast I started called “Men Nation Podcast” the first question that comes to mind is what is your purpose for starting this podcast. What is your purpose for starting something new? What is the purpose of making a change? Someone once said that if you can’t explain something simply then you do not understand it at all. So with that I will attempt to make this first blog post short enough to be understood but with enough detail to understand the purpose of Men Nation Podcast.
Ever since I was a kid I always had a deep desire to share my perspective of the world with other people. I had a deep fascination of media outlets, radio, television, and other media. I remember recording myself on an old RCA cassette player. I would find a blank or perhaps other music cassette (which I quickly learned that in order to record over a cassette you must cover the plastic openings with tape) and begin my “radio show” in which I was the host/DJ. I learned the radio terminology from radio programs that I would listen to and record myself as if I was live on the air. I later looked for ways to not only record my voice but to be able to play music just like a real DJ would and come back from the song saying things like “That was Luis Y Ada Pricilla with their new song called Sigue Adelante”. I would get a rush from thinking of myself being live on the air and many people throughout could listen and enjoy the music and commentary I would make.
As I continued my “career” as a self proclaimed DJ which the only listener was myself I began to find other media avenues I could express myself and share music and opinions with others. My Dad’s good friend was a Ministering Clown who would go from church to church as they invited him and would minister to children and adults alike through his clown acts. Every time he came to town I always made a point of convincing my parents to take me to the show so that I could come out in his act as one of his “Dancing Chipmunks”. It was the time of my life. Right around the same time my parents purchased a brand new, probably 50 lb VHS Camcorder. It was a dream come true for me. Not only that but my Mom provided the training for me to be the operator of this camcorder. I quickly turned into the official camera man for all birthday parties, weddings, and special events. I would set up the camcorder with the tripod in my room and prepare for clown shows and later live concerts right in my own room. I later invited some of my friends and we recorded ourselves playing live. Of course there was a cassette player on the floor and we would lip sing.
So much has happened since the last time I announced myself as the radio host or the main band at a concert on that VHS Camcorder. One thing that never went away however, was the nagging desire to share with the world. In fact it has only continued to grow. I heard somebody say that if you have a desire to do something and you try to put it off or ignore it but it does not go away but rather gets stronger, then you might want to consider doing that. This is how Men Nation has started. To be completely honest with you I never considered a Podcast, much less a Podcast geared towards Men. But I began to ask myself what was a topic that I was passionate about. What was an area in which I felt and believed that a lot of people needed to hear about. Well one topic was the topic of Men and masculinity. I had encountered several people in my life as of recently who had brought that topic up to my attention and how society was affecting how we saw Men in general and how society might even be trying to change that in a negative way. I ran into things like PragerU talking about the educational system and boys, How Hollywood depicts all Men in their sitcoms, how Disney either kills off the fathers or presents them as absent all together. So many things began to come to my mind about this topic. And I began to feel a burden to share my thoughts, opinions, and observations with the world.
So when you ask me what is the purpose of Men Nation podcast. Is it a Podcast only for Men? Is it only for Men who are lacking in some area? Is it for those who don’t know what it means to be a Man? No, No, and No. I strongly believe that it is part of a conversation a lot of people in general should be a part of. Even those that are uninterested in the topic at first. Once you realize that this topic affects so much more than just men. It affects wives, families, children, communities, employment, friends, neighbors, security, life, and death, then you will begin to see the importance of having these conversations and dialogues. So the purpose is to open a door that most people walk past every day without giving it second thought or even caring about what is going on behind that door. God presents himself as our Father. As a Loving, merciful father. Yes he is a Good Good Father. We need to model that in our Men, in our Fathers.
